Hey Fam, we’re back at it again! This week we’ve whipped up a special How-To blog on making your own edibles! That’s right, move over Betty Crocker, there’s a new baker in town! We will show you two ways to make edibles at home, we will start with the traditional method using infused butter or oil, and follow up with a simple method for consumers new to edibles.
What do you need to make cannabis edibles? Most traditional edibles like brownies, cookies, or cakes, simply sub out the amount of butter/ oil that the recipe calls for and replace it with cannabis infused ingredients instead. So before you pull out your favourite dessert recipe, you’re going to need to make your own cannabutter. Here is what you’ll need:
1 ounce of your favourite cannabis strain, ground and decarboxylated.
3 cups of your butter or oil of choice.
A solid 6 hours of your time.
What does it mean to decarboxylate your cannabis and why do you need to do it? Plain and simple, to decarb your weed is to activate the THC in your weed by cooking it low and slow. This means, you can’t just pop a bud in your mouth and pray to get high- it’s not gonna happen. In order for cannabis to intoxicate you, THCA needs to be converted into THC by heating it. THCA is found in the raw cannabis plant and is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, but as it dries it slowly becomes THC. Adding heat to the cannabis speeds up the process.
Because most recipes call for butter/margarine, this seems like the most obvious choice for infusing, however this isn’t your only choice. You can use various oils, like avocado, olive, or even MCT Coconut oil. Whatever carrier you decide on, make note of the smoke point, as butter and other oils can burn easily, you’ll want to keep an eye on it while cooking. The oil or butter you select will indicate the temperature and amount of time it will take to infuse. If you don’t have the Magic Butter Maker or a Levo to make your infused butter for you, we’ll walk you through it.
Once you have your decarbed herb, add it to your melted cannabutter and begin to cook this mixture at a very low heat for at least 3 hours to ensure maximum infusion. You do not want this to ever boil so keep an eye on this mixture, stirring every once and a while to make sure nothing is burning at the bottom. You can use the stovetop and saucepan, or use the slow cooker method as well. Once infused to your preference, strain the ground cannabis from the butter and seal in a jar. Once cooled, some water might separate to the top, just pour it out, that’s normal. Now you have butter for this recipe and the next! Be careful, this is gonna be potent.
Now that you have your cannabutter, all you need is your favourite cookie recipe and you’re good to go! If this is your first attempt at edibles, we would suggest only subbing out a quarter of the butter for the infused product. For example- your recipe calls for 1 cup of butter. You would use ¼ cup infused butter and ¾ cup regular! Because you don’t know the exact potency of your cannabutter- you don’t want to overdo it as it’s impossible to know what dose you’re getting. Start low and go slow when it comes to new formats. Just because you may be able to take three bong rips back to back, you might not be able to hack edibles the same, as they produce a way different experience than smoking. Once you’ve made your favourite cookie, brownies, cake, etc. make sure to enjoy them safely. Edibles can take anywhere from 30-90 minutes to kick in, so just because you don’t feel something right away, this is no indication to eat more. The delayed onset is due to the cannabis having to travel through our G.I. tract before being processed by the liver, as opposed to smoking that instantly enters the bloodstream. We suggest you wait at least 2.5 hours before ingesting more. Like we said, it’s impossible to know what dose you’re getting- the first cookie you ate could have only had 1mg, while your next cookie might have a higher amount like 5mg. This is due to the fact that regardless of how well you mix your batter, you can not guarantee it’s going to be equally distributed throughout, meaning some spots may be a little more concentrated than others.
Now if baking isn’t your thing, or you’re simply too nervous to attempt making your own cannabutter, we have a little cheat up our sleeve.
That’s right. Get your favourite THC spray, or CBD if that’s the vibe you’re going for, and you’re instantly set for edible success. Because you can accurately dose yourself with the sprays, you will know exactly how much you’re getting with each edible. Most oils are flavourless, however some do have a minty taste, so know what you’re using! Spray however many pumps you want on top of your single cookies or cupcakes. Or even mix the oil in with your frosting before icing the cake. A way easier way to not overdo it by over consuming.
Our favourite at home edible? Canna-Krispie Squares! Super simple and delicious. All you need is three ingredients:
Crispy Rice Cereal
Melt your cannabutter and marshmallows together over the stove or in the microwave, once ooey gooey, add your cereal, mix until fully combined and either eat that baby right from the bowl, or press into a square pan and enjoy your dessert like a proper human. That’s it, that's all.
